How you appear to the world

When potential customers meet you in person—or visit your website—they’re subconsciously forming an opinion about you in less than 7 seconds. That’s human nature—and that’s why the Front End of your business is crucial.

What do people see and experience when they visit your website? Are they meeting the best possible version of you? Or are you hiding behind a “persona” that’s not authentic?

What topics are you covering on your blog, your podcast, in videos, or during webinars? Are you tackling the topics that really matter to you—or playing it safe?

Aside from your website, where else are you showing up online? When someone Googles your name, what pops up? Does your online presence feel tidy and organized, or is it a hot mess?

How do you interact with potential clients on social media? On your blog? On the phone? What about face to face—how do you come across in your everyday life?

What you choose to wear sends a message to the world. What are your clothes saying? Do the photos on your website accurately represent who you are as a coach?

The policies and systems that keep your business running smoothly

What happens when a potential client reaches out to you—what’s your intake process? Do you have consistent policies for scheduling, rescheduling, cancellations, deposits, full payments, and all of the other administrative aspects of your business?

When your Back End is sloppy, inconsistent, or weak, your clients can sense it. It can erode their trust in you—or lead to missed payments, awkward misunderstandings, and other types of costly drama.

The Back End of your business might not be as “visible” to the public as your Front End, but it’s just as important.

What do you offer, exactly? What are your current products and services? Do your current offerings excite you—or do you feel unenthusiastic about everything? Do your current offerings make sense for your ideal client and the reality of his/her lifestyle? Or are you offering something that doesn’t really make sense—or feel valuable—for the type of person you’re trying to reach?

Video #2. Intake process.

When someone is interested in hiring you, what is the exact process that unfolds? Do you have specific instructions laid out clearly on your website? How should they get in touch? Do you have standard language that you’ll use to keep your communication consistent with each client?

Video #3. Intake forms and agreements.

What information do you need to collect from your potential client before your first session? Do you have a client agreement that explains how coaching works, what you provide and don’t provide, and what your client is responsible for doing as well?

Video #4. Policies.

What are your office hours? Are you available for texts and emails? What are the limits you’re going to set with your clients regarding how much they can contact you and how much they can expect to hear from you? Are you communicating those policies clearly?

Video #5. Payment.

Which payment system will you choose? Will your clients make a deposit to confirm their session? Will you require full payment by a certain date? Do you have a refund/cancellation policy—and are you certain that your clients are reading it?

Video #6. Legal protection.

Depending on what type of coaching practice you run, you might need to include specific language on your website, in your emails—and other areas—to protect yourself from potential legal issues later down the line. Do you know what you need?

Your competence and confidence as a coach

Lots of coaches obsess over finding “the perfect tagline” or choosing the “right mailing list software.” Those details do matter. But none of those external bells and whistles matter as much as your competence and confidence as a coach.

Are you an effective listener? Are you intuitive and insightful? Do clients feel safe in your presence? Do you consistently help your clients to get results—results that can be felt, seen, and measured? Are you sure about that?

You can have the glossiest website in the universe and impeccable back-end systems, but if you lack confidence in your abilities, your clients will sense it.

This module includes specific steps you can take to hone your craft and become an even more effective coach. You’ll also collect evidence to prove to yourself—and others—that you’re the real deal. (Nothing slays insecurity like e-v-i-d-e-n-c-e!)

Video #1. Evidence.

When you’re coaching clients, do you cross your fingers and “hope” that your work is… actually working? Or do you follow up with each client, conduct surveys, collect info, build case studies, and collect evidence to prove to yourself—and others—that you’re an effective coach?

Video #2. Role modeling.

There’s what you “say” you care about. And then, there’s what you actually “do.” Are you an inspiring role model who walks her talk? Or is there a mis-alignment between your words and your actions? When people work with you, would they feel proud to say to their friends, “My coach is a huge role model for me”?

Video #3. Artistry.

Coaching is more than just “listening and talking.” What is the unique artistry that you could bring into your coaching sessions? Do you have a background in yoga or hypnotherapy? Are you a professional musician? Are you gifted with Tarot cards? Could you weave music, movement, or some other “custom flavor” into your coaching practice? What would feel fun, memorable and distinctive?

People don’t hire coaches because they’re “totally fine.” People hire coaches when they’re frustrated, suffering, or seeking a specific type of transformation. What is it that you’re promising to your clients, exactly? Are you confident that you can deliver? If not, what needs to happen to bolster your confidence?

Most coaches think they’re “good listeners.” Some are. Some aren’t. With every coach, there’s always room for improvement. When a client is speaking, what are you hearing? Do you hear what they’re saying? What they’re not saying? What they wish they could say? Or do you predominantly hear your own inner critic saying, “You’re not a good coach”?

Hey there! It’s Susan. My official job title: Master Certified Life and Business Coach.

You may have seen me featured on national TV and in magazines like O: The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Women’s World.

I’m based in Indiana where I live with my husband of 23 years, 2 teenage kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 ferret, and a huge collection of Beyoncé-related tank tops and coffee mugs.

I created CLEAR COACHES because of a serious problem that I observed in the coaching industry. That problem? The fact that most coaches are making very little money. Way too little. Average income: less than $30,000 per year. Unacceptable. “This shouldn’t be happening,” I thought to myself. “Somebody needs to create a business training program that teaches coaches how to get clients and make money consistently.” CLEAR COACHES was born in response.

The first session of CLEAR COACHES began with 10 participants, me, my laptop, and a webcam. I’ve led the program 15 times since then—and the curriculum has grown and evolved with each session.
